When the Swedish newspaper concept Metro, which was purportedly politically independent and operated as a free news magazine, declared bankruptcy in 2019, approximately 10,000 vacant newsstands were left abandoned. These structures remained invisibly visible in the public spaces for years, effectively transforming into common-use objects within the urban environment.
The public installation features three sculptures made from deconstructed Metro newsstands, engraved with it’s titles; The Whole Truth, Unbiased Media, and Source Critique. These works critique the erosion of independent journalism, as the bankruptcy of Metro, once a symbol of accessible, unbiased reporting. Reimagined as gravestones, the stands mourn the loss of media integrity and serve as metaphors for its societal impact.
Anonymously placed in a public space on All Saints' Night, the sculptures merge memory and critique, prompting reflection on the consequences of losing politically and financially independent news sources.
